VSW ARIES

Ultra Violet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS) has been an important technique in the study of electronic structure of surfaces and absorbed atomic layers on them. Also the decomposition and reaction of molecular species on surfaces may be characterised by the identification of electron energies associated with molecular bonds.

Angular Resolved UPS (ARUPS) has extended the usefulness of UPS to enable mapping of band structure by simultaneous measurement of the energy and angular distribution of electrons.

ARIES is the accepted state-of-the-art package for ARUPS in photoemission and synchrotron studies based on the highly acclaimed HA 54 series of hemispherical analysers with a 50 mm mean radius.

ARIES offers the following techniques:
  • Angle Resolved UPS (ARUPS)
  • UV Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS)
  • High Resolution Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (HREELS)
  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
  • Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES)
  • Ion Scattering Spectroscopy (ISS)

Synchrotron Studies
ARIES systems and components are in daily use in almost every synchrotron facility in the world. The system can be tailored for any research application involving a specific number of techniques.

ARIES configurations may be assembled from the following modules:
  • HA 54 hemispherical analyser for high angular and energy resolution now allows small approach angle (17 degrees)
  • AG 200 single axis goniometer
  • AG 202 twin axis goniometer
  • Mumetal lined ARIES chamber with two experimental levels
